Things to do right now:
- Gas smell: Teach everyone in your home or building what gas smells like. Always take action if you smell any kind of foul odor.
- Emergency procedures: Learn what to do in the event that you smell gas, and learn about the dangers that carbon monoxide can pose. Review the section in the manual titled 'Emergency Procedures.
- Flammable materials: Move any flammable and combustible materials such as paper, clothes, wood, gasoline and solvents away from any gas appliances.
- Learn about your PROGAS system: Request a visit from PROGAS to learn about your LPG tank. You should be able to identify and operate shut-off valves, regulators, and safety relief valves.
- Talk with your children: Be sure they understand the following important safety tips:
- If you smell gas, tell an adult right away and then go outside
- Do not turn or play with the knobs or other controls on a stove, oven, water heater or other appliance.
- Do not play around or climb on a gas tank, gas line, appliance or other parts of the PROGAS system.
Things to do at the start of the heating season:
- Annual safety check: At the start of the heating season and only once a year ask the PROGAS team to perform a complete safety check of your bulk LPG system and appliances.
Things to do only as needed:
- Monitor your fuel gauge: Check the fuel gauge on your LPG tank periodically. Contact PROGAS if the gas level is running low (less than 30 percent).
- If you do run out of gas, close the shut of valve on your LPG tank.
- Report damage: Alert PROGAS of any major dents, rust, or other damages to your LPG tank, appliances, and other parts of your bulk LPG system.
- Unconnected gas lines: Be sure that any unconnected gas lines are plugged or capped. Contact a qualified PROGAS technician to perform this job safely.
- Closing up a house: When closing up a house for an extended period of time consider shutting off the PROGAS tank and each appliance. When you return ask PROGAS to come and check your system for you to make sure everything is good for service.
- Ice and snow: Carefully clear snow and ice from regulators, regulator vents, piping, tubing and valves, as well as from your tank and the area around it.
- After bad weather: After high winds, heavy rain, snow or any other weather emergency, check your PROGAS tank and system. If anything appears to have been damaged, contact PROGAS right away.
